G.I.R.L.S (Great. Independent. Responsible. Ladies of STEM)
This semester in GIRLS, we will be partnering up with ITW for a one on one mentorship program. Through this mentorship, the GIRLS members and their sponsors, hope to gain more STEM insight, advice on how to tackle day to day high school struggles, and new confidence in ourselves. We will be going on outings with our mentors and as a club as well. We are planning to revamp the club board and hold an event at Speer this semester as well. Come check us out! Thursdays at 3:55pm-4:55pm in Room 226 with Ms. Holland and Ms. Garcia.
Poe Society has now read about a half a dozen horror stories. We've analyzed famous authors like Edgar Allan Poe, Ray Bradbury, Stephen King, and Shirley Jackson, as well as many lesser known names. We're preparing to outline, write, and edit our own horror stories, and, hopefully, have a guest speaker from local horror bookstore Bucket O' Blood.
Girls Who Code
We are beginning to work on our Rube Goldberg machine for the Noble competition at the end of February, which Speer will be hosting. The challenge is to open up and put on a band aid. Our machine will be hospital themed. We hope to continue the tradition of first place in the network.
Book club has read Speak, The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace and The Circle this year. We discuss the major themes in the books and how they relate to our lives. We wil be announcing our next book in the next week!
We have a big regional tournament on February 18th. We have teams starting to build underwater robots for the March 18th SeaPerch competition. Students have been computer modeling, designing, building, and programming some awesome robots. We also hosted a very successful FIRST LEGO League tournament for middle school kids and fundraised a lot for our program.
Our Robotics Team won 1st Place in the FIRST Tech Challenge Chicago-Central League Tournament!!!
